Hydraulic Modeller (4)

With a background in hydraulic modelling, you will primarily be working on a range of flood risk projects involving river and surface water modelling for flood mapping studies, surface water management plans, flood strategies and other flood management projects. These projects make a difference to local communities and the environment, serving a range of public and private sector clients including regulators, local authorities, water utility and strategic construction companies.
The key areas of responsibility associated with this role are
- Experience in implementing 1D and 2D modelling techniques for river and urban flooding – applications.
- Understanding and experience of modelling of surface water flood modelling techniques.
- Appraisal of flood risk costs and benefits.
- Project management with oversight of hydrological, hydraulic, and environmental inputs, on a variety of flood risk management projects.
- Liaising with clients, hydraulic modellers, project managers and other design and management team members.
- Writing and reviewing technical reports.
- Taking a technical leadership role in ensuring flood management project deliverables meet clients’ needs including taking ownership and responsibility for the quality of project work to meet the highest standards.
- Technical development of less experienced colleagues in the team.
- Leading the technical input to business development activities.
- Championing technical innovation to improve efficiency and quality of delivery, ensure effective dissemination of latest methodologies and tools.
- Experience of leading and winning tender opportunities.

The right candidate will have
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in civil engineering or environmental/earth sciences and 1 year post grad UK sector experience minimum.
- UK sector experience.
- Experience of flood risk management techniques and methods including option appraisals.
- The ability to produce high quality technical writing for bid and project work.
- Experience of liaising with clients and managing projects to develop new opportunities.
- Ability to deliver of innovative solutions to difficult challenges
- Commercial awareness and evidence of ability to deliver projects and bids to time and budget
- Experience of key fluvial hydraulic modelling software packages: HEC-RAS, HEC-2D, Flood Modeller-TUFLOW etc.
- Knowledge of UK hydrological methodologies; understanding of Flood Estimation Handbook Techniques is an advantage.
- Project Management experience.
- Proficiency in using GIS software such as ArcGIS/QGIS.
- Knowledge and experience of the planning system relating to flood risk management.
- Experience of Safety in Design and Designer’s responsibilities under CDM.

- Location: Hybrid working (and offices in Halifax, Glasgow, Warrington, Derby and Birmingham)
The projects are covering all aspects of Wastewater and Water networks, and treatment facilities through the project lifestyle from feasibility design through to detailed design and construction. These roles offer hybrid working with the opportunity to work out of one of their key offices based in Halifax, Glasgow, Warrington, Derby and Birmingham.
About the role:
- Implement the project requirements to fully meet the clients specification in accordance with relevant standards
- Undertake any work of a technical nature that falls within ability and competence
- Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff
- Carry out site visits and surveys and inspections
- Prepare and check feasibility studies, inspection, assessment and technical reports and other written documents in an appropriate format ensuring compliance with our clients procedures
- Comply with the requirements of our clients Integrated Management System including Health & Safety, Environmental and all other appropriate regulations
- Prepare/check design approach, calculations, drawings and documents
- Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team environment
About you:
- Degree qualified, and Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng/ IEng through ICE, or relevant equivalent professional qualification) or approaching achieving relevant professional qualification having completed the necessary training requirements.
- Demonstrable experience in Water / Wastewater Engineering
- Computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and relevant engineering software packages
- Good written and oral communication and organisational skills and to produce reports in clear concise English
- Desire to develop existing skills and acquire new technical competences to enhance personal and team capability
- Proven ability to work within a team environment with a dedicated approach to meet project deadlines
- Client focused approach to service delivery
- Proven enthusiasm to embrace and participate in career development initiatives
