The Vacancy
Our client is recruiting a Design Lead to support their growing Flood, Coast & Maritime (FCM) team, with particular emphasis on leading a large engineering project or supporting a portfolio of projects. The team undertakes a variety of engineering projects for clients in the Flood Coastal and Maritime sector including appraisal, business case development, detailed design and site supervision.
Operating as a design lead to the engineering team(s) across the UK, the candidate for this role should have a strong technical base and have good experience in the appraisal and design of flood risk management schemes. The primary purpose of the role is to undertake and co-ordinate design within a multi-disciplinary engineering team ensuring consistent quality and timeliness of output. You will be accountable for the planning and execution of engineering projects to the defined scope, cost, and programme.
You will work closely with clients, junior team members and other specialist teams throughout the business to deliver the projects. The ability to travel to company offices and Client offices and project sites is essential. Where a key role is needed to support a major project travel to a co-located office will be needed on a regular basis.
Primary Responsibilities
The role is suitable for an experienced Chartered Civil Engineer. You should be able to demonstrate leadership and the technical knowledge and experience to guide engineering teams in the following areas:
- Coordination of design outputs across all technical disciplines
- Delivery of the design stage outputs of each project within the agreed timescale and budget
- Organisation of the work required and documenting in the Design Management Plan
- Ensuring that an adequate Technical, Safety and Environmental review is carried out for each project
- Oversight of production of design documents which are cost effective, meet the requirements of the specification and which can be purchased, installed, and commissioned effectively.
- Ensuring that company/Client standard designs and design practices are utilised wherever possible
- Agreement of the design cost budget and monitoring performance against the budget and providing forecast costs to completion for individual projects
- Recording, monitoring and controlling design changes in order to maximise cost efficiency
- Preparation of monthly project status reports
- Raising and resolving technical queries
- Establishing working relationships with Client and staff and supply chain representatives to promote buildability and supply chain efficiency in design outputs
- Contributing to ensuring a safe working environment for all staff
- Maintaining a positive and solution-oriented approach to work, providing open and honest feedback
- Being aware of the need to satisfy customer requirements with the aim of enhancing the customers’ perception and satisfaction
- Taking all reasonable steps to ensure appropriate confidentiality
- Oversight of or site supervision duties for engineering project
Client Focused Leadership
- Responsible for determining key client interests and drivers on high complex projects and determine the key clients in specific business lines
- Is seen by Clients as an advocate for their organisation and as a trusted technical advisor
- Communicates client interests and drivers to the wider business and contributes to business line strategy
- Proactively offers other services to the clients to meet their specific challenges and requirements
- Develops and maintains regular customer contacts for expanding product/service across multiple clients
Commercial Acumen
- Mentors members of the engineering team in managing budgets, efficient delivery, recognising scope change, managing project risks and implementing mitigation measures
- Experienced in building up costs for production of engineering deliverables, predominantly under the NEC suite of contracts
- Knowledge of programme management using Microsoft Project or other suitable software
- Awareness of the tools used to monitor project performance and produce accurate cost and spend profiles to support for the project management of commissions
Strives for Continuous Improvement in Project Execution
- Undertakes the role of Technical Authority on projects and ensures that all deliverables are compliant with our quality management system
- Consistently and independently applies specialist knowledge and complies with quality program relative to assigned tasks
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with quality program
- Consistently provides guidance and direction to others from their project team
- Supports and actively encourages continuous improvement and change management efforts
- Assists with development of quality systems and procedures within consultancy

- Salary: £35,000 – £55,000 (depending on level of experience)
- Location: Hybrid working (and offices in Halifax, Glasgow, Warrington, Derby and Birmingham)
The projects are covering all aspects of Wastewater and Water networks, and treatment facilities through the project lifestyle from feasibility design through to detailed design and construction. These roles offer hybrid working with the opportunity to work out of one of their key offices based in Halifax, Glasgow, Warrington, Derby and Birmingham.
About the role:
- Implement the project requirements to fully meet the clients specification in accordance with relevant standards
- Undertake any work of a technical nature that falls within ability and competence
- Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff
- Carry out site visits and surveys and inspections
- Prepare and check feasibility studies, inspection, assessment and technical reports and other written documents in an appropriate format ensuring compliance with our clients procedures
- Comply with the requirements of our clients Integrated Management System including Health & Safety, Environmental and all other appropriate regulations
- Prepare/check design approach, calculations, drawings and documents
- Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team environment
About you:
- Degree qualified, and Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng/ IEng through ICE, or relevant equivalent professional qualification) or approaching achieving relevant professional qualification having completed the necessary training requirements.
- Demonstrable experience in Water / Wastewater Engineering
- Computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and relevant engineering software packages
- Good written and oral communication and organisational skills and to produce reports in clear concise English
- Desire to develop existing skills and acquire new technical competences to enhance personal and team capability
- Proven ability to work within a team environment with a dedicated approach to meet project deadlines
- Client focused approach to service delivery
